The first juror to be revealed was Bob Deaver from film & animation. We are excited to have him because Film & Animation has never before been part of Gallery r until the CIAS Invitational Exhibition and we are pumped for this presence.

RIT students and alumni working in all mediums, including but not limited to 3D Digital Graphics, Animation, Clay, Craft, Drawing, Film, Glass, Graphic Design, Illustration, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Medical Illustration, Metals, Motion Media, New Forms, New Media, Painting, Photography, Performance, Poetry, Print Media, Printmaking, Sculpture, Wood

Entries Must Do One of the Following -

ü charter a common ground for visual arts and Poetry

ü clarify the definition of Craft

ü involve Performance in any way you designate, including video

ü respond to or is inspired by your definition of Poetry, Craft, or Performance

ü interpret or capture what Poetry, Craft, or Performance means to you

ü demonstrate that the process of your work is important to you

It is the objective of Gallery r to investigate the integral relationships of art as it pertains to poetry, craft, and performance. Poetry is a manifestation of imagery through the use of language, whereas the modes of visual art are supplemented by words. Artistic rendition can be argued to involve performance. Performance can be defined as the actions of an artist (or poet) in a particular place and time, or as any process resulting in a physical or articulated work of art. For the true literary or visual artist, this artistic performance requires craft. Through craft, artists respond to the traditions set forth through embodiment, defiance, and/or development. This exhibition seeks to bridge the artistry of the literary with the visual while clarifying the craft element of all art. Whether the materials are wood, time, or words, we ask that exhibitors reveal the fine art of poetry, craft, and performance. This is a juried exhibition! Jurors to be announced.

Acceptance

Notification of acceptance will be announced Monday, February 13, 2012. Accepted artists must help in the installation of their work. Kindly note that Gallery r has limited resources and may need exhibitors help in supplying means for exhibiting their work.

Each CIAS faculty member participating in the show invited a student of their choice to submit work for the exhibition. This show is very exciting for us because it offers a rare opportunity for staff and students to showcase their work, side by side. We look forward to moving into our future site on College Avenue where we will be surrounded by the rich creative culture of Rochester, including the Arts and Cultural Council for Greater Rochester, Village Gate, and the Memorial Art Gallery.

Sharing in the adventure of moving to a new venue, Lumiere Photo will be right next door (Hello Dave!), marking the beginning of a wonderful new connection for Gallery r.

The site has a long way to go before it will be ready for our Grand Opening Exhibition this fall but we are making moves, like creating our own entrance through the brick which symbolizes the gallery's ability to break new ground in the arts community and branch out as it grows.

We are already becoming involved in neighborly relations. Below we are with Bill Edwards, owner and President of Lumiere Photo.

Installation art uses almost any material or medium to transform space in order to create an unmediated experience for the viewer. The attraction to this form of art by artists and viewers alike comes from the total immersion in the artist’s creative ideas and concepts. A traditional painting or sculpture requires the directed attention of its audience, while viewers have no choice but to attend to installation art once they enter the space and are surrounded by all encompassing sights, sounds, textures and sometimes even smells. This form of art has become a prominent part of the contemporary fine art world. While our students have been exploring and producing this kind of work for many years, they seldom have the opportunity to exhibit their work outside of their class or studio environment because of the amount of space and time it requires to set-up. Some of the work must be constructed in the actual exhibition space requiring more time than many galleries want to relinquish between shows. For these reasons this show opens with some pieces still under construction. This gives our audience a rare opportunity to see how a show is assembled. This exhibit showcases just a few students’ work and presents documentation of work from others to show the diversity of installation art being done at RIT, which is often unseen by the general public.

How you can impact and improve the arts at RIT -

Through your support of Gallery r, RIT’s student operated metro gallery and learning laboratory for the arts, you can positively impact our students and the Rochester community. Administered by the School of Art in the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences (CIAS), Gallery r has opportunities for all CIAS students, faculty, and alumni to showcase and sell art. In support of its mission, Gallery r celebrates each spring with an annual benefit. In honor of Gallery r’s 10th anniversary, this year’s gala event will be held at Bausch and Lomb World Headquarters in downtown Rochester on Thursday, March 26, 2009 - and our Emcee will be Norma Holland, morning anchor and reporter at 13Wham News (ABC).

HOW TO DONATE ART

All donations need to be collected by February 15, 2009 to ensure it is featured in the bidding catalog. We will accept all forms of art with a minimum value of $50 - computer art, glass, ceramics, wood, sculpture, illustrations, photographs, paintings – whatever your medium.

To deliver your art donation in person, please drop it off in the CIAS Dean’s Office located in the Gannett Building (7B) or at Gallery r (located at 775 Park Avenue) with the form below attached to your artwork.

All donating artists will receive a complimentary artist admission ticket for themselves and a guest to attend the benefit. We hope you will be able to join us and enjoy the festivities. - A student competition of work (RIT students only)

- Submit your work Friday, October 17 from Noon to 5pm at The front entrances of Gannett and Booth

- Work that is 2-Dimensional should be framed and ready to hang

- $2.00 Fee per submission

- Adjudicators: Karen Sardisco (RIT) and Nick Ruth (HWS Colleges)

OPENING RECEPTION: October 24, 2008 from 7:00 - 9:30 PM

The show runs October 23 through November 15.

Supported by Rochester Institute of Technology, Gallery r is an off-campus student managed art gallery that is administered by the School of Art, College of Imaging Arts & Sciences. Gallery r actively educates and encourages viewers to examine the relevance of art and cultural exposure in their own lives.

As a metropolitan gallery, r presents art to the widest possible arts-supportive audience and maintains a selected collection of student and alumni artwork for on-site consignment and sales. The gallery serves as an educational laboratory site and visual arts venue for all RIT College of Imaging Arts and Sciences students.
